Temple Israel of the City of New York was established in
1870, in Harlem. From Harlem, the congregation moved to the Upper West
Side, and in the early '60s to our current home on the Upper East Side.
The congregation is committed to a modern, intellectual approach to
Judaism. We are a diverse community in every aspect -- age, ethnic
origins, family constellations, political and social perspectives, etc.
We are united by our struggle to integrate a meaningful Jewish life
with the modern reality of American culture.
Temple
Israel emphasizes a sense of community, and communal celebration of
calendar and life-cycle events. We call only one Bar or Bat Mitzvah to
the Torah on any given Sabbath, and have limited the size of the
congregation to that which can join together at one time to worship in
our sanctuary (approximately 1000 individuals). At the same time, we
offer the full range of religious, educational, communal, and social
programs found in much larger congregations, including an Early
Childhood Learning Center, and an afternoon religious school program.
Temple Israel is especially concerned with encouraging
those who are attempting to build creative Jewish homes -- those who
were not born into a Jewish home, those who were raised with little
Jewish content in their familes, and those who are searching for a
Judaism which is consistent with contemporary intellectual perspectives
in the secular world. Toward that end, we sponsor - in conjunction with
Hunter College - a seminar on The Future of Modern Judaism. The papers
are published each year, and a copy may be obtained by writing or
phoning the congregation.
Please feel free to call our
office for further information.
